Join the Committee!
It's a lot of fun to be part of the Music Illawarra committee! Have you thought about joining but you aren't so sure what will be expected of you? Here's a short overview that will hopefully give you some insight into being part of this wonderful club.
The Music Illawarra Committee meets roughly about once a month, and sometimes a bit less often. It all comes down to when our events are scheduled. Closer to concert or competition time, there may be more meetings to get everything organised. In quieter times, we may only meet once every two months.
You can choose to be an ordinary member. To do this, you should ideally attend the AGM in February, offer your services to the club, and pay the annual membership fee. Nothing more and nothing less - you don't have to send in a cv or resume, and you don't have to "prove yourself". We are just happy to have you on board. If you cannot make it to the AGM or you wish to join at another time of the year, you are most welcome to do so. As an ordinary member you are expected to attend as many meetings as you can (and of course we understand this is sometimes not possible) where you will have the opportunity to have your say in the everyday organisation of Music Illawarra. You are expected to help out as much as possible in the organisation and the running of our events.
You can also choose to apply for an executive position. To do this, you must express your interest in person at our annual AGM, generally held in February. Executive members are then elected by the current Committee and pay the annual membership fee. As an executive member, you could have a role as Treasurer, Music Director, Secretary, Vice President or President. These positions demand a bit more work than the ordinary Committee members, but they are well worth it! To be an executive member, you should be willing to spend about 2 hours each week working for Music Illawarra. Good organisational skills, reasonable computer knowledge and a willingness to cooperate and communicate effectively with other members are vital. It is important that you attend as many Committee meetings as possible.
Whatever you choose to do, it's a fun and rewarding experience to be involved. Firstly, you have the opportunity to make a difference in the Illawarra. Secondly, you get to know a lot of people in our community and beyond - both musicians and non-musicians. Another enticing detail is that our meetings always go accompanied by a very scruptuous afternoon tea!
Whatever incentive it is that you find most interesting, have a really good think about joining us. The more people on board, the better. Music Illawarra can only grow with your help.
If you are still unsure or you have any questions, why not contact us for some more information?
We sure hope to see you soon at one of our meetings!
