A Mosaic of the Gong
"A Mosaic of the Gong" is an exciting new composition project that Music Illawarra is starting in 2011, and hopefully continuing for many years to come.
We will invite 3 local Australian composers to write a 1-movement work each. Every work will be related to the city of Wollongong in some way, be it the steelworks, the harbour, the escarpment, the city's multiculturalism,... and will be written at a level suitable to Year 12 Music students, so they may be used for HSC music performance exams.
Over the next few years, and depending on the success of the project in 2011/12, we hope to invite different composers each time, eventually literally building "a musical mosaic" of Wollongong.
Once the compositions will be finished, high school music students from the greater Wollongong area will be invited to workshop with these composers and learn to perform the new works. Year 11 and 12 music students will also have the opportunity to participate in composition workshops, in order to get some direction in writing a composition for the HSC music exams.
We are currently negotiating some of the finer details, but we can already announce the dates we have set aside for this project:
Saturday 26th November 2011, 1:30-3:30pm ~ Composition Workshop. Venue TBA.
Saturday 11th February 2012, 1:00-5:30pm ~ 1st performance workshop with composers. Details and venue TBA.
Saturday 18th February 2012, 1:00-5:30pm ~ 2nd performance workshop with composers. Details and venue TBA.
Saturday 25th February 2012, 1:00-5:30pm ~ 3rd performance workshop with composers. Details and venue TBA.
Sunday 26th February 2012, 2:00pm ~ Concert, premiering 3 new works about Wollongong. Details and venue TBA.
